The Complete Symphonies of Franz Schubert

Richard Wattenbarger

I bought this recording of the complete Schubert symphonies and, to my surprise, I discovered that they had thrown in a special bonus: one of the incomplete symphonies–No. 8 in B minor! Now that's what I call a bargain.  I wonder where I could find a recording of all the incomplete symphonies.

There are at least 2 orchestrations of the incomplete Schubert symphonies – well, you know, maybe 3. The conductor Felix Weingartner wrote and recorded his own completion of one of the big ones (E major?); in the 70s and 80s, a couple of different people did orchestrations of the really fragmentary mss., which exist in piano score. You might check with Robert Winter or Joshua Rifkin – at some point, they were doing the fragmentary symphonies volume of the new Schubert edition, and probably they are on top of recordings.
